I love to travel. And while some people like to plan every moment of their vacation travel in advance, I prefer to just go with the flow and see what I discover. Which means that when I’m traveling in a new city I’ll often use Google Maps or maybe Trip Advisor when I’m looking for a spontaneous meal or adventure.

But honestly neither one of those tools is great. They tend to show you mostly the touristy things, or just guide you to a nearby Starbucks, and they certainly aren’t applications that deliver a great user experience for travelers.

So when I met Olena Kasian, founder of OKTOWN, I was really intrigued. Her startup has developed a new digital platform that is an optimized marketplace for outdoor activities and local tourism. For local businesses, it’s a way to be discovered by visitors. For tourists, it’s of way of finding out cool things to do around you, wherever you travel.

Olena has launched OKTOWN in her home country of Ukraine, and plans to expand into new cities across Europe.

As a traveler, I love the idea of an app that connect me with great local experiences. As a businessperson, I love the idea of an app that makes it easier for small businesses to get discovered by new customers. The fact that OKTOWN does both smoothly and efficiently bodes well for the success of this new startup.
